The killing of Honora Mary Parker

Following the murder, during the trial, it was made public that the two girls had plotted to kill Honora Mary Parker to avoid being separated as Pauline Parker’s parents had been planning to send her abroad.

On the other hand, Joanne Drayton, biographer for Perry said the trial managed to spark a “salacious interest” in the teenagers. Quoting Drayton, Stuff website wrote, “The matricide, the betrayal of a daughter by a mother, the lesbianism – homophobia was rife and undoubtedly in the mix – it was looked at with horror and a degree of repugnance”.

However, Perry later denied the implications that the two were romantically involved. Speaking with a British newspaper, Perry denied the rumored nature of their relationship, but asserted that it had been “obsessive”.

Since they were not old enough to receive the death penalty, the girls were instead sentenced to jail. After serving her time in prison, for five years, Perry left New Zealand to start over and briefly worked as a flight attendant.

According to media reports, she also experimented with the Mormon culture, before eventually settling into a small village in Scotland.

The murder was dramatized in 1994, by Peter Jackson, in which Kate Winslet played the role of Juliet Hulme while Melanie Lynskey played the role of Pauline Parker. The adaptation went on to be nominated for an Academy Award.
