SOUTH KOREA: On Tuesday, K-pop sensation BTS’s maknae, Jungkook, officially began his mandatory military service, a requirement for all able-bodied South Korean males aged eighteen to twenty-eight.
According to a BBC report, Jungook who is popularly dubbed the group’s maknae (a term that is used for the youngest member in a group of any kind), and serves as their lead vocalist, enlisted for his mandatory military service. Weeks prior, the idol was touring the US to promote his new music and performing in a last-minute public concert for an excited crowd from a rooftop in Times Square.

Touted as The Beatles of South Korea, BTS is an internationally acclaimed K-pop group with various musical features including Halsey, Nicki Minaj, Becky G, Lauv, Jason Derulo, Steve Aoki, and many more. In the last few weeks alone, Jungkook has released collaborative music with Justin Timberlake and Usher. He also released his debut album Golden which hit number one on several charts. Additionally, his single “Standing Next To You” has become a trend on TikTok.
Despite his recent peak of fame as a solo act, the 26-year-old returned to Seoul, to begin his military service and is the last member of BTS to do so. Before enlisting, the K-pop idol held a pizza party livestream and informed fans of his decision to go into active military duty. It is pertinent to note that since South Korea is technically at war with its Northern peninsula, most men across the country are required to complete eighteen months of mandatory military service.

As per earlier media reports, BTS had been at loggerheads with relevant authorities concerning their military service, with some quoting they might be exempted from the service as they were responsible for much of the country’s economic inflow as well as rising tourism. While this would not be the first exemption, as previously Olympic medalists and classical musicians have been exempted, in 2020 the South Korean Parliament passed the bill allowing BTS to delay their military service till 30 years of age.
At the time, many government minister and fans of the band argued the case that they had served their country by earning billions of dollars and should be allowed to continue their efforts under their musical capacity. However, reports indicated the K-pop group was against the delay and determined to complete their military enlistment. The reports were confirmed last October when the BTS’ agency BigHit Music confirmed the seven-member group would be fulfilling the obligation. BigHit Music confirmed that the eldest member, Jin would start his military service by December, of the same year.

Grace Kao, a K-pop academic and professor at Yale University believes, “For Western audiences, it does seem quite cruel that people at the height of their success have to stop and take a forced hiatus whether they like it or not”. Kao added that while it is true that many across South Korea are used to the idea of such a hiatus, a preliminary warning to fans has helped them in dealing with the situation in that it did not come as “a surprise”.
Aside from Jungkook, RM (group leader), V, and Jimin also enlisted on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. One fan commented, “My heart is hurting OMG, I just can’t do this anymore. I’m gonna miss them all so much”.
