29th March 2021: Civil Rights Activist Al Sharpton spoke at the live press conference before the trial of Derek Chauvin, who killed George Floyd, and was televised on Al-Jazeera English.

“What was it that George Floyd was approached for? The defence is attempting to talk about the stimulants in George Floyd, but what kind of stimulants are they that made a man hold his knee over him for a full 8 minutes and 46 seconds?”

“What would make you keep pressing when a man is begging for his life, saying he can’t breathe, and asking for his mother? This wasn’t a flash of anger that happened in 8 seconds. This was intentional, and so should the justice in the courtroom be intentional. We will stand in dignity beside his family till the end, as we have stood till now”, he declared.

“Chauvin is in the courtroom but outside it is America that is on trial, to see whether we have reached the stage where the police is subject to the law and not above it.”

“George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021 has passed the House and it should be passed by the Senate too, so that there is a federal law superseding all state laws that give escape routes to perpetrators”, he demanded.

“I saw President Biden on the campaign trail promise justice to the family of George Floyd. The President , Vice-President, and House Majority Leader, are here to restore the broken justice for this family and others like it.”
