Chinese Firms Keep Supplying Critical Drone Parts to Iran and Russia Despite U.S. Sanctions

Chinese companies are continuing to provide essential components, including engines, motors, batteries, and chips, for military drones to manufacturers in Iran and Russia, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation.

The report highlights China’s overwhelming dominance in global drone production, leaving countries such as Russia, Iran, and even Ukraine heavily dependent on Chinese parts and technology. Teardowns of Russian first-person-view (FPV) quadcopters used in Ukraine have repeatedly uncovered Chinese-made motors, batteries, and processing chips. Ukrainian experts have stated that producing these drones at scale would be nearly impossible without access to China’s vast supply chain.

Iran relies similarly on Chinese technology for its Shahed-style kamikaze drones, which it produces domestically and supplies to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.

Many of the components are dual-use items originating from China’s massive commercial drone industry. While American administrations have launched initiatives to build domestic drone production capacity, experts warn that matching China’s cost efficiency and volume could take years.

The situation illustrates deepening geopolitical tensions. China maintains a public stance of neutrality while its industrial base continues to support military capabilities used against Western-aligned forces in Ukraine and the Middle East. Low-cost drones are playing an increasingly central role in modern battlefield tactics, sustaining conflicts in both regions.
