COVID-19: Major breakthrough in the vaccine

Lahore, 6th August 2020: Pakistan has started testing for the coronavirus vaccine. The University of Health Sciences (UHS) will conduct tests on the vaccine developed in Australia on humans.

According to the details, the vaccine developed under the name ‘COVIX-19’ proved to be successful in the first phase. The vaccine was used on animals in the first phase.

In the second phase, the vaccine will be tested in the United States and other countries. There will be an agreement between Flanders University and the UHS to test the vaccine on humans.

Jinnah Sindh Medical University in Karachi will also be part of the agreement. A video meeting and a media briefing were also held at Vaccine Testing Preview. Professor Nikolai Petrovsky and Professor David Gordon from Australia attended the media briefing via video link.

Vice-Chancellor of Jinnah Medical University Prof. Tariq Rafi also participated on the occasion through video link. Professor Nikolai Petrovsky gave a briefing on vaccine development and success.

UHS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Javed Akram says that initially the vaccine will be tested on 25 people in Pakistan, and they will be given the original vaccine.

On the other hand, 25 people will be given ineffective medicine as control. Recruitment of the volunteers will be carried out in a few days. The vaccine will reach Pakistan from Australia shortly.

The vaccine would be given to patients in the form of intramuscular injection, more patients would be vaccinated in view of the pilot project.

He said that approval would be sought from the National Bioethical Committee and DRAP.

 

The professor further said that this vaccine is proving to be effective in animals in Australia and now in humans.

Other universities in Pakistan will also be part of the project, the trial of the vaccine will start in two weeks’ time. Preparations on the scale can take up to three months.
