Fuel Truck Pulls Away During Refueling, Damages Air China Boeing 747-8 and Spills Jet Fuel at JFK

A fuel truck unexpectedly moved while still connected to an Air China Boeing 747-8 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport early Monday, damaging the aircraft’s wing fuel ports and causing a significant jet fuel spill on the apron.

The incident occurred around 1–2 a.m. local time on August 31 as the aircraft (registration B-2486), operating flight CA982 to Beijing Capital International Airport, was being pressure-refueled at a gate in Terminal 1. Video circulating on social media shows the truck lurching forward with two fuel hoses still attached, tearing the connections and sending fuel pouring onto the tarmac.

The driver reportedly exited the vehicle without shutting off the engine and sought help from other ground staff. Passengers were in the process of boarding at the time. Boarding was immediately halted, and those already on the aircraft were ordered to disembark. No injuries were reported.

Ground crews and firefighters responded quickly to contain the spill, inspect the damaged fuel ports, and clean the area. The flight, scheduled to depart at 2:05 a.m., was canceled. Air China later cited “fuel guarantee” issues in notices to passengers, who were informed of the cancellation only hours after the planned departure.

The 2014-built Boeing 747-89L sustained minor damage, according to the Aviation Safety Network. The aircraft remained grounded at JFK for inspection and repairs as of early September. Neither Air China nor the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued a detailed public statement on the cause.

The episode has drawn attention to ground handling procedures at one of the world’s busiest airports, with the circulating video highlighting the risks of moving equipment while fuel lines remain connected.
