Unlike well-known human flu viruses, influenza D primarily circulates among livestock such as cattle, pigs, and poultry, and has been detected in a wide range of animals. Serological studies in the United States have found high levels of antibodies among agricultural workers, indicating that human exposure may be more common than previously thought, though most past infections have caused no severe symptoms. A strain recently found in China has even shown limited human-to-human spread in laboratory settings, raising concerns about its potential evolution.
Canine coronavirus (CCoV) — another virus originally associated with gastrointestinal disease in dogs — has also attracted scientific attention. Multiple rare human infections have been documented in regions including Southeast Asia and the United States, sometimes linked to respiratory symptoms and pneumonia.
