Heated Clash at Manchester Airport as PIA Flight PK702 Grounded Due to Technical Fault

A tense confrontation erupted between frustrated passengers and cabin crew on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK702 at Manchester Airport on January 2, forcing authorities to call in police to restore order.

The Islamabad-bound flight, scheduled for departure in the evening, was grounded after a technical fault was discovered, leaving hundreds of passengers including families, children, and elderly travellers stranded for hours. Reports indicate delays stretched beyond six hours initially, with some passengers enduring over 24 hours of uncertainty amid freezing temperatures outside the terminal.

Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media described chaotic scenes inside the airport, with passengers loudly voicing complaints and demanding answers from crew members, who appeared overwhelmed while attempting to manage the situation. Passengers reported being shuttled back and forth, waiting onboard the aircraft for extended periods before being deplaned, only to face further delays in the terminal without clear communication from the airline.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed their presence at the scene but reported no arrests or injuries. The intervention helped de-escalate the situation, allowing airport staff to assist affected travellers.

PIA, which resumed flights to Manchester in October 2025 after a five-year UK ban lifted due to prior safety concerns, has faced ongoing operational challenges, including technical issues and delays on its revived routes.

The airline has yet to release an official statement on the incident. Flight tracking data shows a subsequent PK702 service departed Manchester en route to Islamabad on January 3.

Passenger rights groups have urged those affected to seek compensation for the significant disruption, highlighting recurring reliability issues for the national carrier.
