India Successfully Tests High-Caliber Aerial Bomb at Ramgarh Range in Haryana
India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a trial of a high-caliber aerial bomb on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the Ramgarh Test Range of the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Panchkula district, Haryana.
The test was carried out at a large defense testing facility spread across approximately 5,500 acres. A powerful explosion was witnessed during the trial, sending a massive plume of black smoke into the sky and drawing attention from nearby areas.
Ahead of the test, local authorities issued a public advisory instructing residents to remain indoors between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. as a precautionary measure due to the anticipated blast intensity and the possibility of debris dispersal.
According to available information, the weapon tested was a large air-dropped bomb designed for deployment from combat aircraft. The bomb is believed to weigh between 500 and 1,000 kilograms and is filled with high-explosive material.
Such trials are conducted to evaluate blast effects, fragmentation patterns, penetration capability, and overall destructive performance.
Defense observers noted that the scale of the explosion and the thick black smoke indicated the testing of a highly powerful explosive bomb, potentially intended for future use by the Indian Air Force.
The trial took place at the Ramgarh firing range, a dedicated testing facility operated by TBRL. The site is located in an isolated and secured area away from major population centers.
As part of safety protocols, residents of nearby villages, including Bhanu, Billa, Asrewali, Nagal, Mogi Nand, Kishangarh, TMV Colony, and the Ramgarh municipal area, were advised to stay indoors during the test window.
The successful trial is being viewed as another step in India’s ongoing efforts to develop and validate advanced aerial munitions and strengthen its indigenous defense capabilities.
