International Day of Women in Diplomacy Observed Worldwide

The global community is marking the International Day of Women in Diplomacy today, honoring the vital contributions of women in shaping international relations, peace negotiations, and multilateral cooperation while calling for greater gender equality in diplomatic leadership.

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2022, June 24 recognizes the achievements of women diplomats and highlights persistent barriers to their full participation in decision-making processes. The day encourages governments, international organizations, civil society, and academic institutions to promote inclusive policies and remove structural obstacles facing women in foreign services.

Despite progress, statistics underscore the challenges ahead. Between 1992 and 2019, women represented only 13 percent of negotiators, 6 percent of mediators, and 6 percent of signatories in peace processes worldwide. Women continue to hold fewer than one-quarter of cabinet minister positions globally, underscoring the need for accelerated efforts toward parity.

This year’s observance features events across continents, including gatherings of women diplomats and students to discuss leadership, inclusive decision-making, and barriers to senior roles. Leaders from various nations are issuing tributes to pioneering women diplomats.

UN officials emphasize that greater inclusion of women strengthens diplomacy and advances the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on gender equality. More women in diplomacy means better outcomes for peace and progress, amid ongoing calls to combat misogyny and expand opportunities.
