Is the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict setting a new world order?
Is the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a threat to regional stability? As claimed by reports of global powers coming together to demand a ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
According to reports of Baaghi TV, the former Soviet Union territories are reportedly engaged in conflict with each other since the fall of the Soviet Union, with Azerbaijan staking its legal claim over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, however, Armenian separatist forces are attempting to take over, leading to the deadly escalation in the region. Meanwhile, it is believed that the clash between the two is paving ways for a changed world order due to the repercussions of the war may completely change the regional framework.
Ceasefire efforts fail between Armenia and Azerbaijan
It is pertinent to note that Turkey’s involvement and support to Azerbaijan is a key figure in the territorial dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Chavushoglu said, “It is our duty to convey Azerbaijan’s just struggle to the world” as Turkey continues to extend unconditional support to Azerbaijan and urges the global community to stand with the truth. According to reports, Turkey is providing support by deploying its pro-Ankara Syrian forces.
Azerbaijan-Armenia: Armenian Leader seeks US intervention
According to reports of Al Jazeera, the speeches made by Azerbaijan and Armenia’s leaders foreshadowed the rising escalations in the region. According to Al Jazeera, the use of language by the Azerbaijani President and Armenian PM was “cautioning”.

The Minsk Group working under the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), has failed to achieve tangible results with regards to negotiations between the former Soviet Union states, who have been engaged in conflict since the early 1990s when the disputed territory declared independence from Azerbaijan. At the time, almost 30,000 people had been confirmed dead by the authorities. In addition to this, post-war statistics show that the region is mostly populated by Armenian nationalists rather than Azerbaijanis who reportedly left following the war in the 1990s.
Armenia ready for ‘mutual concessions’ with Azerbaijan on Karabakh: PM
Now more than ever, there are doubts as to the performance of the Minsk Group which seems to have run its course. Experts believe that if the conflict continues it may completely turn the tables and leave Russia with limited power in the region. Turkey’s involvement in the region is being viewed on foreign policy fronts. It is important to note that while Turkey and Russia are on opposite sides in the Syria-Libya conflicts they have common ground on the Western politics front.
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict threat to regional stability?
According to reports, both Turkey and Russia are manipulating the conflict to suit their cause by exerting their influences to keep the Western powers out of the region. It is believed that the global pandemic as well as the United States “isolationism” have provided Turkey and Russia the perfect opportunity to “hijack” the Nagoro-Karabakh conflict.
It is pertinent to note that the renewed hostilities come at a period of international distraction due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the upcoming US elections which may divert attention from the cause of Azerbaijan, if future ceasefire negotiations are agreed upon.
Why Nagorno-Karabakh clash could lead to global conflict?
Moreover, despite calls from the United Nations to curb the conflict, under mediation of the OSCE, Azerbaijan has shown indifference as OSCE does not seem like a viable option. In addition to this, the shift from mediation of OSCE to that of global powers Russia, Turkey and Iran, seems indicative of the power play at hand. It is pertinent to note that if the conflict lasts longer, there may be a shift in political dynamics with Turkey and Russia having to make significant strategic decisions.
