Islam Khatray may! (Islam in danger)
On March 14th, 2024, Ihsanullah Tipu Mehsud (@IhsanTipu) tweeted the following:
“Hamaytullah Mayar, Mayor of Mardan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced closure of KFC restaurant in Mardan. A resolution was passed in a City Local Council’s meeting. Resolution includes directives to local business community to cease sale of all Israeli products in Mardan.”

A friend of mine responded, “He’s doing this because KP has not released any funds to local bodies in nearly 2 years now. These guys have no mandate. Mostly, their role is “daura” (visits) of primary schools … fighting education department over tab’adlay(appointments) posting … and getting nalkay nalay(taps & drains) fixed. So, if he and the lot of local govt are given promised resources and set to work … they wouldn’t have time to be passing resolutions to “ban KFC”.
Irrespective of the reason, it is extremely dangerous to play the religious card in any way in an extremely volatile country like Pakistan. A country where in an urban area of Lahore market a woman could have been lynched for wearing a shirt boasting Arabic verses and thereby blasphemous, whereas the word written was Halwa in Arabic, that means beauty.

Hussain Haqqani, former ambassador of Pakistan to the US, is Diplomat-in-Residence at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi and Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute in Washington DC, in a recent article shared an exchange with an Arab businessman. He remarked upon the Inchra incident that he immediately thought of his wife and daughters. “They wear Arabic calligraphy designs as part of their dress,” he said, adding, “I was thinking of expanding my business to Pakistan, but do I want to walk through Lahore or Karachi with my wife or daughters, risking such attacks?” (March 14, 2024)
In playing upon the ignorance of the illiterate, fed upon regular dosages of ill translated & less understood Islamic scriptures, playing the populist card is playing with fire.

Unfortunately, Imran Khan has repeatedly invoked religious narrative to whip up frenzy with the masses, understanding their pulse well. He had compared his political struggles with the religious one of the Caliphs. It’s ironic that Imran Khan frequently makes contradictory statements. While his own children enjoy a luxurious lifestyle in Western culture and he himself has spent a significant portion of his life immersed in it, he advocates for Islamic social, cultural, and political values. Unfortunately, he exploits religious sentiments for political gain, attempting to position himself as a leader in the Muslim world despite his lack of positive contributions to Muslim states. By playing on religious and political divisions, he has polarized our society.
We all must recognize that for our own political gains, we cannot and must not undermine the fabric of our society. The government should prioritize the needs of the people, economic development, and the unification of our society into a cohesive unit.
