Jaishankar Holds Key Talks with UAE Deputy PM in Abu Dhabi Amid West Asia Tensions

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday during a two-day official visit to the United Arab Emirates. The discussions centered on strengthening the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and addressing the evolving security situation in West Asia.

The talks took place against the backdrop of recent Iranian missile and drone attacks on the UAE and other regional countries, as well as the announcement of a two-week US-Iran ceasefire. Both sides reviewed the serious implications of these developments for regional and international security, global navigation, energy supplies, and the world economy.Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s full solidarity with the UAE in its efforts to protect sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of citizens and residents. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed appreciated the visit, describing it as a reflection of the depth of the bilateral strategic partnership, and assured the well-being of the large Indian community in the UAE.

The meeting also covered measures to enhance mutual cooperation, including information-sharing and coordination on maritime security and energy routes, with particular concerns around the Strait of Hormuz. Jaishankar expressed appreciation for the UAE’s assurances regarding the safety of Indian nationals amid the tensions.

This visit marks an early high-level Indian diplomatic engagement in the Gulf following the recent conflict and ceasefire developments. Jaishankar arrived in Abu Dhabi on April 11 and is scheduled to hold further meetings with UAE leadership to review ongoing collaboration in trade, investment, technology, and energy sectors.India has welcomed the US-Iran ceasefire and continues to advocate for lasting peace, de-escalation, and unimpeded trade flows in the region. The large Indian diaspora in the UAE, along with strong economic ties, including significant energy imports, remain key priorities for New Delhi.

The two countries share a robust Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with growing cooperation in defense, security, and people-to-people ties. Officials described the talks as productive and forward-looking.
