Kerala Police Registers Case Against X Over Defamatory AI-Generated Video Targeting Modi

The cyber wing of Kerala Police has filed a case against social media platform X and a user account for circulating an AI-generated video that allegedly defames Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India.

Police described the content as misleading and warned that it could undermine the credibility of constitutional bodies while potentially disrupting free and fair elections in the state.

The case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram City following inputs from official channels, including the Election Commission. It names the X handle associated with the user along with the platform itself.

Sections invoked include provisions related to intentional insult, forgery, statements conducing to public mischief, common intention, undue influence at elections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and identity theft under the Information Technology Act.

An investigation is underway to identify those responsible and initiate further legal action.This move comes amid increased monitoring of social media platforms during the run-up to Kerala’s assembly elections, with authorities focusing on curbing digital misinformation. The rapid spread of AI-generated deepfakes has raised concerns about their potential to mislead voters and influence the electoral process.

The incident reflects growing challenges posed by accessible AI tools in the political sphere, where manipulated media can quickly circulate online. Similar cases involving AI content targeting political figures have been reported in other parts of the country in recent months.
