Police officials in Punjab province have claimed that the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the accused in the murder case of Mayra Zulfiqar, a Belgian citizen of Pakistani origin, has been matched with the samples found in the crime scene.

According to the details, a senior police officer overseeing the investigation into the murder case told BBC on condition of anonymity that DNA samples from the three accused arrested in the case and evidence gathered from the crime scene was sent to Punjab Forensic Science Agency.

According to the police officer, three different samples from the crime scene matched the DNA samples of the main accused Zahir Jadoon. According to officials, this evidence will play an important role in convicting the accused.

Mayra Zulfiqar, the 25-year-old law student and Pakistani national, was killed on May 3, 2021, at her home in the Defense area of ​​Lahore. The First Information Report (FIR) was registered against four accused including two nominees of Mayra Zulfiqar’s uncle Muhammad Nazir. According to the FIR, the accused had planned the murder as the two men allegedly wanted to marry Mayra.

According to police records, three FIRs have been registered against the accused, including Zahir Jadoon, under various provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), including attempted murder, illegal possession of weapons, kidnapping and theft. Sources reveal that investigation is underway on another DNA sample found at the scene and it will soon be known who else was with accused Zahir Jadoon that day in the alleged murder.

Police have arrested accused Zahir Jadoon, his brother Tahir Jadoon and driver Muhammad Waseem in the case while the final challan of the case has not been submitted yet. According to police sources, after receiving the forensic report, the final challan will be submitted to the court soon, after which the formal trial of the case will begin.

Syed Farhad Ali Shah, Zahir Jadoon’s lawyer, told the BBC that he had no information that his client’s DNA matched the samples collected from the crime scene. Shah further said that the prosecution has not yet submitted the final challan of the case to the court and only when the police present such a thing in the court will they be able to speak on such evidence.

According to the senior police officer, the evidence shows that Mayra Zulfiqar was allegedly killed by more than one accused. According to investigators, Mayra Zulfiqar’s fingernails contained DNA samples from two men, as well as a man’s DNA samples from gloves and armor seized from the crime scene.

In addition, the Punjab Forensic Science Agency received an unused pistol bullet from the crime scene and two tissue papers full of blood. Moreover, a pair of used gloves, band, shirt, shoe, Men’s vests etc. were also found. Police also found three mobile phones used by Mayra at the crime scene.

The police team has already recovered a vehicle and a pistol allegedly used in the incident from the possession of the arrested accused. According to the police officer, the accused Zahir Jadoon had admitted during interrogation that he was allegedly annoyed by Mayra Zulfiqar’s blackmailing. In the preliminary investigation, the accused told the police that he met Mayra a few years ago in London and later became friends.

According to Zahir Jadoon’s statement given to the police, when Mayra Zulfiqar moved to Pakistan a few months ago, the meeting between the two resumed but when Mayra not only allegedly blackmailed the accused Jadoon with old photos and videos. In fact, the victim also posted pictures of accused Zahir Jadoon’s fiance and mother on social media with vulgar words.

According to Zahir Jadoon, despite his repeated requests, when Mayra did not remove the pictures from there, he became angry and decided to take this extreme step. Initially, the case was handed over to the Defense Police Station, but given the sensitivity of the case, the case was handed over to the police’s Crime Investigation Agency (CIA).

It may be recalled that just two weeks before her murder, Mayra Zulfiqar had lodged a written complaint against a named accused in Defense B police station that the accused allegedly stole her mobile phone and he wanted to rape her.
