Mesmerizing Views Captivate Northern Hemisphere as Total Solar Eclipse Darkens Skies

Skywatchers across parts of the Northern Hemisphere were treated to a breathtaking celestial spectacle on August 12, 2026, as a total solar eclipse swept a narrow path of darkness from the Arctic through Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain.
For those lucky enough to stand in the path of totality, the Moon completely blocked the Sun for up to about 2 minutes and 18 seconds near greatest eclipse, plunging daytime into an eerie twilight and revealing the Sun’s delicate corona, its glowing outer atmosphere, in a display many described as unforgettable.
The path of totality began over remote Arctic regions and northern Russia before crossing eastern Greenland and western Iceland including areas near the Snæfellsnes peninsula, then arcing across the North Atlantic to make landfall again in northern Spain in the late afternoon and early evening, ending near the Balearic Sea around sunset. Major locations that experienced totality included parts of western Iceland and cities in northern Spain such as Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia, and Palma de Mallorca. A small corner of Portugal also caught a brief moment of totality.
Outside the narrow track, a partial eclipse was visible across a much wider area of the Northern Hemisphere, including most of Europe, parts of North Africa, much of Canada, Alaska, and the northern and northeastern United States. In some places the eclipse coincided with sunset, creating dramatic “sunset eclipse” views.
NASA and other observers noted that viewing opportunities for totality were more limited than in recent events such as the 2024 North American eclipse, with only a handful of land areas lying fully in the Moon’s dark umbral shadow. Still, the event drew crowds to Iceland and Spain, where many shared images and videos of the corona, Bailey’s beads, and the sudden drop in temperature and light.
Astronomers reminded viewers never to look at the partially eclipsed Sun without certified solar eclipse glasses or proper filters, as the remaining sunlight can cause permanent eye damage.
The August 12 eclipse was the only total solar eclipse of 2026 and the first to cross mainland Europe since 1999. For many who witnessed the brief but mesmerizing darkness, it was a rare reminder of the precise cosmic alignment that makes such events possible, and a highlight of the astronomical calendar.
