Modi Joins Key Gulf Leaders at G7 Outreach Session in France on Iran Crisis

India: Indian PM Modi will participate in a special G7 outreach session in France next week alongside leaders from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to address the ongoing Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

French President Emmanuel Macron has convened the high-level meeting during the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains (June 15–17), focusing on the economic fallout from Iran’s blockade of the vital oil waterway since March. The closure has caused sharp spikes in global fuel prices and major disruptions to energy markets.

Discussions are expected to centre on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, and advancing efforts to de-escalate the US-Israel-Iran conflict that began in late February 2026. Macron has emphasised the real impact on global economies due to soaring energy costs.

Modi’s participation underscores India’s role as a key outreach partner and voice of the Global South. His Europe tour begins with bilateral engagements in Nice with President Macron, including the launch of ‘Bharat Innovates’ under the India-France Year of Innovation 2026. The Prime Minister will then make a historic state visit to Slovakia before joining the G7 sessions.

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi is likely to hold meetings with other world leaders, including a possible bilateral with US President Donald Trump. India’s involvement highlights its strategic partnerships in tackling energy security and international stability.

The broader G7 agenda also includes support for Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in attendance, along with other outreach guests such as Brazil, Kenya, and South Korea.
