Modi Welcomes US-Iran Peace Deal, Hopes It Will Restore Peace and Ensure Freedom of Commerce

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the recently announced peace agreement between the United States and Iran, expressing optimism that the deal would bring stability to West Asia and secure vital maritime trade routes.

In a statement, PM Modi highlighted the importance of the agreement in ending hostilities and reopening key passages for international shipping, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for global energy supplies.

“We welcome the peace deal between the US and Iran. It is our hope that this will help restore peace in the region and ensure freedom of commerce through important waterways,” sources close to the Prime Minister’s Office quoted him as saying.

The development comes amid a formal ceasefire and an upcoming signing ceremony scheduled for June 19 in Geneva. The deal, mediated with significant involvement from Pakistan and other regional players, aims to end months of conflict, lift naval blockades, and facilitate unimpeded trade.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs had earlier issued a formal welcome to the ceasefire, stressing the need for lasting peace and dialogue in West Asia. Officials noted that the agreement holds particular significance for India due to its energy imports and large expatriate population in the Gulf region.

Analysts say the deal could help stabilize oil prices and boost economic confidence, with global markets already reacting positively to the news of reduced tensions.

Modi is currently on a visit to Europe, where discussions on the West Asia situation are expected to feature prominently in his engagements. The Indian government has consistently advocated for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to conflicts in the region.
