The use of the N 95 mask has become very popular to use against the corona as it could block about 95% of airborne particles. It has been in use for a long time to protect the person wearing this mask from inhaling into the lungs airborne pathogen, dust and other particles mostly in workplaces.

The N 95 comes with and without an exhalation valves. So in this case, the use of masks with exhalation valves is the wrong type since it allows the exhaled air from the individual to escape without filtration allowing for the potential of spreading the virus.
The second item that needs attention in order to deal with the virus is the 6 feet rule of social distancing. If the rule is not followed then the virus will be spread by the complex physics of aerosols and could be spread farther mostly due to particle sizes and atmospheric conditions. As explained before, the purpose of the mask is it to retain body fluids from getting airborne and for filtration of virus already airborne in the air from entering the body.
