Pakistan Medical Association Condemns Government Over Fuel Price Increase
Karachi (Dawn News) — March 09, 2026: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has strongly criticised the government following the latest increase in fuel prices, calling the move “unprecedented” and urging authorities to reverse the decision immediately.
According to reports, PMA Secretary General Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro described the decision as “highly condemnable and regrettable,” stating that it reflects the government’s indifference towards citizens struggling with rising living costs.

Dr. Shoro said the move has intensified the financial burden on ordinary Pakistanis, “the majority of whom are finding too hard to make ends meet”.
He also expressed concern over the timing of the increase, noting that several countries in the region have refrained from raising fuel prices despite escalating tensions in the Middle East.

“Even India, which reportedly gets a significant part of its fuel supplies through the war-affected Strait of Hormuz, hasn’t increased fuel prices,” he asserted.

Dr. Shoro further argued that the government’s decision was difficult to justify, stating that Pakistan’s fuel supply largely depends on imports from countries such as Saudi Arabia as well as domestic production.
He warned that continued economic pressure on citizens could lead to broader social consequences.

Dr. Shoro cautioned that if the price increase is not reversed, it could trigger serious public unrest, including violence or a rise in suicide rates, urging the authorities to reconsider the policy in the public interest.
