Pakistan Observes 27th Martyrdom Anniversary of Havildar Lalak Jan, Nishan-e-Haider Hero of Kargil
The nation and Pakistan Armed Forces on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed, the valiant soldier posthumously awarded Pakistan’s highest military honour, Nishan-e-Haider, on the 27th anniversary of his martyrdom during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
Havildar Lalak Jan, a member of the Northern Light Infantry (NLI) regiment, laid down his life on July 7, 1999, while defending a critical forward post against intense Indian attacks. Despite sustaining serious injuries from heavy shelling and enemy fire, he continued to repel multiple assaults, inflicting heavy losses on opposing forces and refusing evacuation until he embraced martyrdom.
Born on April 1, 1967, in Hundur village of Yasin Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, Lalak Jan joined the Pakistan Army on December 10, 1984. Known for his discipline, leadership, and dedication, he rose through the ranks to become a Havildar and served with distinction in the rugged mountainous terrain.
His extraordinary gallantry in the Drass Sector of Kargil earned him the Nishan-e-Haider, making him the 11th and most recent recipient of the prestigious award. Military officials and historians describe him as a soldier who “smiled back at death,” holding his position with unyielding resolve under overwhelming odds.
On this occasion, senior military leadership, including Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the services chiefs, along with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, offered tributes and laid wreaths at his mausoleum in Gilgit-Baltistan. Ceremonies across the country highlighted his sacrifice as a shining example of patriotism and courage.
Havildar Lalak Jan’s legacy continues to inspire generations of Pakistanis, symbolising the indomitable spirit of the nation’s defenders who guard its frontiers with their lives. His story remains etched in the annals of Pakistan’s military history as a testament to selfless service and supreme sacrifice for the motherland.
