Pakistani Artist Rashid Rana Showcases Gaza Installation at Art Basel Doha | Baaghi TV

Doha (Dawn/Images) — February 5, 2026: Renowned Pakistani contemporary artist Rashid Rana has presented a powerful new installation focused on Gaza at the inaugural edition of Art Basel Doha, drawing international attention for both its artistic approach and humanitarian intent.

Key Developments:

  • Pakistani artist Rashid Rana unveils a Gaza-focused installation at the inaugural Art Basel Doha, built from open-source CCTV footage of air strikes.
  • All proceeds from the $30,000 artwork are pledged to Palestinian relief organisations, selected in consultation with community representatives.
  • The installation’s Doha presentation comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Art Basel confirming continued monitoring of security conditions.

Titled Fractured Moment, the wall-based installation is exhibited by Mumbai-based gallery Chemould Prescott Road and is composed of hundreds of sequential still images captured from an open-source CCTV camera in Gaza. The footage documents a single night of aerial bombardment during the spring of 2025, visually reconstructing a darkened sky intermittently pierced by flashes of explosions and missile trails.

According to curatorial notes shared by Rashid Rana Studio and Beaconhouse National University’s Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design, the work creates the illusion of a frozen instant while embedding the passage of time within its structure. Conceptually, the installation references Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square, reinterpreting its stark visual language through repeated ruptures caused by aerial strikes.

The artwork, priced at $30,000, will see all proceeds directed to Gaza relief organisations, selected by Chemould Prescott Road director Shireen Gandhy in consultation with Palestinian community workers. The installation was first unveiled in June 2025 at Frieze’s No. 9 Cork Street space in London before traveling to Doha.

Speaking about the project, Rana acknowledged the ethical challenges of representing violence through art, noting the risk of aestheticising human suffering. However, he emphasised that transforming documented realities into art can amplify visibility, pointing out that the CCTV imagery underscores how widely accessible evidence of violence in Gaza already is.

The presentation coincides with heightened regional sensitivities, particularly following a missile strike in Doha in September 2025 that strained Israel–Qatar relations. Amid broader security concerns across the Gulf, Art Basel stated it is coordinating closely with Qatari authorities to ensure the safety of participants while proceeding with the fair as scheduled.

Despite regional uncertainties, artists and galleries have continued to arrive in Doha. Gandhy noted that Rana personally traveled to oversee the installation, adding that global art platforms have a responsibility to engage with urgent contemporary realities rather than avoid them.

Art Basel Doha runs from February 5 to 7, with preview days on February 3 and 4, marking a significant cultural moment as international art spaces increasingly address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
