PIA-Marked Balloon Recovered in IIOJK’s Udhampur District

Authorities in IIOJK recovered an aeroplane-shaped balloon bearing the logo and markings of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in a remote area on Thursday, prompting a security sweep and investigation amid heightened vigilance in the border region.

The balloon was discovered by locals in the Kera area of Laddan in Udhampur district and immediately reported to police. A joint team of police and security personnel rushed to the site, cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure, and took the object into custody for detailed examination.

According to sources and initial reports, no suspicious materials, explosives, or attached devices were found with the balloon. Officials described it as a routine recovery in a sensitive zone near the Line of Control (LoC), where wind-drifted objects from across the border occasionally appear. An investigation has been initiated to trace its origin and confirm whether it drifted unintentionally or otherwise.

Similar PIA-marked balloons, often toy-like or promotional, sometimes aeroplane-shaped and inscribed in English and Urdu, have been reported multiple times in Jammu and Kashmir’s border districts in recent months, including in Samba, Akhnoor, Poonch, and Mendhar. In most cases, inspections have deemed them non-threatening, likely originating as children’s toys or debris carried by wind currents.

Security agencies remain alert to such recoveries in the region due to the strategic location and ongoing sensitivities along the LoC.
