Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has made a pact with United Nations (UN) Women and the Federal Ombudsman for Harassment, Kashmala Tariq, to provide safe travel to women. It is the first airline in the world to take such a step.

According to the details, a Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) was signed between the national flag carrier and the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment (FOSPAH) at Islamabad Airport on Sunday, after which PIA became the first airline in the world to officially take steps to provide safe travel to women.

“With nearly half of workforce of Pakistan comprising of women, that often feel bared to fully contribute in the society and economic prosperity, due to perceived and real hazards faced during transportation. It is every woman and girl’s right that they are provided with the same opportunity to travel freely and without fear of being harassed,” read an official statement.

“This implies full implementation of Pakistan Penal Code 509 & Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010, even onboard.”

“The selection of PIA by the United Nations is a great honor for PIA and Pakistan,” said Air Marshal Arshad Malik. “Protecting sisters and daughters and treating them with kindness is our religious and national tradition.”

In her statement, UN Women Chief Sharmila Rasool said that working on its transportation system is important in the development of any country. “In a country like Pakistan, half the population is women,” she said. “Providing safe transport and environment for women will make the country more prosperous.”
