7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Western Colombia: Deep Nazca Plate Rupture Triggers Widespread Damage

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on the morning of August 10, 2026, sending residents scrambling into the streets across much of the country and neighboring areas. The epicenter was near San José del Palmar in Chocó Department, roughly 5 km east of the town, with the quake occurring at intermediate depth, around 96–110 km below the surface.

Seismologists link the event to the ongoing subduction of the dense oceanic Nazca Plate, which grinds eastward and sinks beneath the South American Plate, the same tectonic process that built the Andes mountains. The rupture occurred within the subducting Nazca Plate itself rather than at the plate interface. The USGS estimates a rupture length of approximately 77 km and energy release equivalent to roughly 1.9 megatons of TNT.

The deep focus meant shaking was felt over a very wide area, including Bogotá, Cali, Manizales, Pereira, Quibdó, and even parts of Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela. Intensity reached as high as MMI VII near the epicenter. A magnitude 5.0 aftershock followed about 45 minutes later.

Early reports describe collapsed or severely damaged buildings in several cities. In Manizales, a cathedral tower partially collapsed and other structures failed; in Cali, local officials reported multiple building collapses with people potentially trapped; Quibdó and Pereira also saw significant structural damage and injuries. Airports in several cities temporarily halted operations due to damage assessments. Colombian authorities, including the president’s emergency response team and the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, are coordinating relief and evaluating the full impact. Casualties include multiple confirmed deaths and numerous injuries, with numbers still being updated as rescue efforts continue.

Videos circulating online show cracked facades, fallen debris, and residents reacting in the streets, stark reminders of the power released even from this relatively deep source. No tsunami threat was issued given the inland, intermediate-depth nature of the quake.

Officials urge residents to remain alert for aftershocks, follow guidance from the Servicio Geológico Colombiano and UNGRD, and check on neighbors and structures carefully.
