China and Pakistan Launch First-Ever Joint Army Exercise ‘Karakoram 2026’ in Xinjiang

China and Pakistan have launched their first-ever joint army training exercise, Karakoram 2026, at a military training base in Korla, in China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The opening ceremony was held on Wednesday, October 14, bringing together troops from both countries for joint training focused on counter-terrorism operations and clearance missions in high-altitude areas.

During the opening activities, Chinese and Pakistani troops exchanged experiences in counter-terrorism operations, while Pakistani personnel observed Chinese weapons and military equipment. All weapons and equipment used in the exercise have been provided by China.

The exercise includes a range of specialised training activities, including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, on-the-move target search and firing, long-range sniping, joint command exercises and live-force drills.

Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Senior Colonel Chen Xi announced the exercise earlier this month, describing it as the first joint army training exercise between China and Pakistan.

Officials say the exercise is aimed at deepening defence cooperation, enhancing operational coordination and improving the two militaries’ ability to respond jointly to terrorist threats.

China and Pakistan already conduct regular joint exercises involving their navies and air forces. The launch of a dedicated army-level exercise marks a further expansion of their military cooperation, extending joint training to ground forces.

The exercise also underscores the longstanding strategic partnership between the two countries, with counter-terrorism cooperation and military interoperability forming key areas of their defence relationship.
