Indian Air Force IL-76MD Transport Aircraft Makes World Record Landing at 13,629 Feet in Eastern Ladakh

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a significant aviation milestone after successfully landing an IL-76MD heavy transport aircraft at the Nyoma Airfield in eastern Ladakh at an altitude of 13,629 feet, marking the highest-ever landing by this aircraft type anywhere in the world.

According to the Indian Air Force, the successful landing demonstrates the operational capabilities of the IL-76MD transport aircraft, the exceptional skills of its pilots and the force's ability to conduct air operations in challenging high-altitude environments.

Nyoma Airfield, located in eastern Ladakh near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, has recently been made fully operational. Situated at an altitude of approximately 13,700 feet, the strategically important airfield is expected to enhance India's military logistics and rapid-response capabilities along its sensitive northern frontier.

Defence experts believe the achievement will further strengthen the Indian Air Force's strategic airlift capabilities in the mountainous region, enabling the movement of personnel, military equipment and essential supplies to forward areas under challenging geographical and climatic conditions.

The Indian Air Force has described the historic landing as a major milestone reflecting its professional excellence, operational preparedness and ability to undertake demanding missions in some of the world's most challenging aviation environments.
