Indian Air Force Set to Sign Deal to Convert Six Boeing 767s into Aerial Refuelling Tankers

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is preparing to sign a major agreement with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to convert six Boeing 767 passenger aircraft into multi-mission tanker transport aircraft, according to reports.
The proposed programme aims to strengthen the IAF’s aerial refuelling capabilities and address operational availability and maintenance challenges affecting its ageing Russian-made Il-78MKI tanker fleet.
The Defence Acquisition Council has reportedly approved the project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 9,000 crore. The programme is also expected to include domestic industry participation and technology transfer, enabling HAL to develop capabilities for aircraft conversion, maintenance and future repairs.
Once operational, the converted Boeing 767 aircraft would allow Indian fighter jets to refuel in mid-air, extending their operational range and endurance. The additional tankers could improve the IAF’s ability to conduct long-distance missions and sustain air operations across multiple theatres.
Deliveries of the converted aircraft are reportedly expected to begin between 2028 and 2030.
