Israeli-American Orthodox Rabbi Says Torah Principles Favour Pakistan Over India in Hypothetical War

A video featuring Israeli-American Orthodox rabbi Yosef (Yossi) Mizrachi has gone viral on social media after he argued that, according to Torah teachings, a God-fearing Jew should favour Pakistan over India in a hypothetical full-scale war between the two countries.

During a lecture, Mizrachi acknowledged that India is one of Israel’s closest strategic partners, with extensive cooperation in defence, cybersecurity, agriculture and other sectors. Pakistan, meanwhile, does not recognise Israel and has historically opposed its policies.

However, addressing the religious dimensions of a potential conflict, Mizrachi contrasted India's predominantly Hindu population with Pakistan's Muslim majority, arguing that the belief in one God carries greater religious significance under the Torah than political or strategic alliances.

He maintained that idolatry is considered one of the gravest sins in the Torah, carrying severe divine punishment and ranking above offences such as murder and theft.

“If I look at the conflict with the divine eyes, who do you think He despises more?” Mizrachi asked, suggesting that idol worshippers would face greater condemnation according to the religious interpretation he presented.

He admitted that, from a practical and political perspective, he would prefer India because of its strategic importance to Israel. However, he insisted that religious principles should take precedence over geopolitical interests.

The remarks have attracted widespread attention, particularly in India, where social media users have highlighted the contrast between the rabbi's religious argument and India's close strategic partnership with Israel.

Mizrachi, a US-based Haredi Jewish outreach speaker, has previously faced criticism over remarks concerning Hindu religious traditions, including the reverence for cows. Israeli officials have also distanced themselves from his statements, clarifying that he does not represent the Jewish community or the State of Israel.

India and Israel maintain close strategic ties, while Pakistan does not recognise Israel. The video has sparked debate over religious teachings, political interests and international alliances, with Mizrachi's argument placing Pakistan on the preferred side from the particular theological perspective he outlined.
