PTA, Meta Block 176,000 WhatsApp Accounts Linked to Recycled SIM Cards to Curb Cyber Fraud

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with Meta, has blocked approximately 176,000 WhatsApp accounts linked to recycled mobile phone numbers as part of efforts to prevent cybercrime, online fraud and the misuse of mobile connections.

The action aims to protect mobile phone users from fraudulent activities involving recycled SIM cards, which can potentially expose individuals to identity theft, financial scams and unauthorised access to digital accounts.

According to the information shared, the PTA has also provided approximately 10 million recycled mobile numbers for further verification to identify accounts that may be associated with previously used or reassigned SIM cards.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the telecom regulator and Meta to strengthen digital security and prevent cybercriminals from exploiting mobile numbers that have been disconnected from their previous owners and subsequently reassigned to new subscribers.

Recycled mobile numbers can create security risks when online accounts remain associated with numbers previously owned by other individuals. In certain circumstances, new SIM holders may receive verification messages intended for previous users, potentially creating opportunities for account misuse and fraudulent activities.

Through coordination with Meta, the PTA is seeking to identify and block suspicious WhatsApp accounts associated with such numbers, thereby reducing the risk of scams and protecting users' digital identities.

The blocking of 176,000 accounts represents a significant step towards improving the security of digital communication platforms in Pakistan. The further verification of around 10 million recycled numbers is expected to help authorities identify additional potential security risks.

The initiative also highlights the growing cooperation between Pakistani regulatory authorities and international technology companies to address emerging cyber threats and make online communication safer for users.
