US Wrestler Morgan Turner Disqualified After Allegedly Gouging Russian Opponent’s Eyes at World Championships

ALBANIA: American freestyle wrestler Morgan Turner was reportedly disqualified from the 2026 Senior World Wrestling Championships on October 27 after allegedly poking Russian opponent Elizaveta Smirnova in the eyes during their women’s 50kg bout.

The incident occurred during a tense contest in which Turner was trailing late in the match. She was accused of repeatedly pushing her fingers into Smirnova’s face, prompting officials to intervene and disqualify the American wrestler for the alleged foul.

According to the report, the disqualification ended Turner’s campaign at the championships and barred her from entering the repechage round.

Smirnova reportedly suffered a corneal injury during the incident and was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the tournament. She was subsequently taken to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The incident sparked widespread criticism within the international wrestling community, with footage reportedly circulating on social media and drawing condemnation from fans and commentators over the dangerous nature of the alleged conduct.

The incident has renewed concerns over athlete safety and the enforcement of rules against dangerous and unsportsmanlike behaviour in international wrestling competitions.
