A Tragic Year for Indian Entertainment: Icons We Lost in 2025

The year 2025 proved to be one of the most sorrowful in the history of Indian entertainment, as the industry bid farewell to numerous legendary actors, directors, and personalities whose contributions shaped generations of audiences. From Bollywood icons to stalwarts of South Indian cinema, their departures left an irreplaceable void, prompting widespread tributes from fans, colleagues, and leaders alike.

Bollywood’s “He-Man,” Dharmendra, passed away on November 24 at the age of 89 in Mumbai after a brief illness. The veteran star, known for his charismatic presence in over 300 films spanning six decades, delivered unforgettable performances in classics like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, and Phool Aur Patthar.”

Earlier in the year, Manoj Kumar, affectionately called “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic films, died on April 4 at 87 due to heart-related complications. The actor-director, celebrated for works such as Upkar, Shaheed, and Purab Aur Paschim, infused nationalism into Hindi cinema and inspired countless viewers.

Comedy lost two of its finest pillars in October. Govardhan Asrani, renowned for his iconic jailer role in Sholay and appearances in over 350 films, passed away on October 20 at 84 following health complications. Just days later, on October 25, Satish Shah, beloved for his witty portrayal of Indravadan Sarabhai in the cult sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and roles in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, died at 74.

Pankaj Dheer, immortalized as Karna in the epic TV series Mahabharat, succumbed to cancer on October 15 at age 68 after a prolonged battle. Veteran actor Mukul Dev, known for his versatile roles in Hindi, Punjabi, and regional films, passed away in May at 54 due to illness.

South Indian cinema also suffered immense losses. Legendary actress B. Saroja Devi, a Padma Bhushan recipient who starred in over 200 films across languages, died on July 14 at 87 from age-related ailments. Telugu icon Kota Srinivasa Rao, featured in more than 750 films, passed away on July 13 at 83.

Other notable departures included TV and film veteran Rakesh Pandey in March at 84, and singer-actor Zubeen Garg in September at 52. Actress and reality TV star Shefali Jariwala died suddenly in June at 42.
