Australia-India Defence Ministers to Hold Key Strategic Talks in New Delhi

New Delhi, June 1, 2026: Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles is set to arrive in New Delhi on June 1 for high-level defence talks with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, as the two countries seek to deepen their strategic and military partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.

The meeting will mark the second Australia-India Defence Ministers’ Meeting under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework. The inaugural ministerial dialogue was held in Australia in October 2025.

The talks come amid growing defence cooperation between the two nations, with Australia’s 2026 National Defence Strategy identifying India as a top-tier security partner and a key defence ally in the northeastern Indian Ocean.

According to officials, the discussions will focus on strengthening naval interoperability, maritime security cooperation, participation in international fleet reviews, and expanding joint anti-submarine warfare activities. Both sides are also expected to advance work on a Joint Maritime Security Roadmap.

India’s offer to support maintenance and repair of Australian naval vessels at Indian shipyards will feature prominently in the discussions, alongside efforts to enhance cooperation in defence manufacturing, research and development, and emerging technologies.

The ministers are also expected to review progress on a range of bilateral agreements, including mutual logistics support arrangements, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief cooperation, air-to-air refuelling initiatives, submarine rescue cooperation, and information-sharing mechanisms.

Defence industry collaboration in areas such as drones, artificial intelligence, cyber security, and integrated air and missile defence systems is likely to be discussed, with both countries exploring new opportunities for joint production and technology development.

The meeting will also assess implementation of previous agreements signed in 2024 and 2025, including frameworks aimed at enhancing air operations cooperation and submarine rescue capabilities. Joint military exercises, including Black Carillon, and broader maritime domain awareness initiatives are also expected to be reviewed.

In addition, both sides are likely to discuss expanding intelligence sharing, cyber cooperation, and trilateral engagement involving India, Australia, and Indonesia.

The talks are expected to reinforce the growing strategic alignment between New Delhi and Canberra as both countries seek to enhance regional security and stability across the Indo-Pacific.
