BNP Secures Landslide Victory in Bangladesh’s Landmark 2026 Parliamentary Election

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), under the leadership of Chairman Tarique Rahman, has claimed a resounding and decisive victory in the February 12 general election, the first fully competitive national poll since the 2024 student-led uprising that forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power.

Projections from local broadcasters such as Jamuna TV and international reports indicate the BNP-led coalition has secured a two-thirds majority in the 300-seat Jatiya Sangsad, with unofficial tallies showing the alliance winning between 209 and 213 seats, well above the 151 required for a governing majority. Rival Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies trailed with approximately 60 to 74 seats, according to various counts, while smaller parties and independents claimed the remainder.

Tarique Rahman, who returned from 17 years of exile in London in December 2025 and contested multiple constituencies, won convincingly in his races, including Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6, and is now positioned to become the next Prime Minister, with a potential swearing-in as early as February 17. The BNP has hailed the outcome as an overwhelming public mandate for democratic renewal, stability, and an end to prolonged political instability following Hasina’s ouster.

Voting unfolded largely peacefully across the country, with high turnout among the roughly 127 million eligible voters, though Jamaat-e-Islami raised concerns about the integrity of the vote-counting process in some areas. As of mid-morning on February 13, the Election Commission had not yet released fully official results, but party claims, broadcaster projections, and media tallies consistently pointed to BNP dominance.

This historic win returns the BNP to power after nearly two decades in opposition and follows the interim administration period.

Analysts see the result as a potential stabilizing force for the region, with prospects for strengthened bilateral relations, economic revival, and a departure from past governance challenges.
