BSF Takes Firm Position, Forces BGB to Retreat During Border Fencing in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar

India: Tensions flared along the India-Bangladesh border when Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) personnel attempted to obstruct ongoing border fencing work by Indian authorities in the Cooch Behar district, only to withdraw after the Border Security Force (BSF) adopted defensive positions.

According to reports from the area, particularly near the Tin Bigha Corridor and Mekhliganj block, land department officials were conducting surveys and installing fencing pillars as part of India’s efforts to secure the international border. The BGB team intervened, objecting to the construction and demanding a halt to the work.

The situation escalated into a heated verbal confrontation. However, when BSF team swiftly moved into tactical positions, the BGB personnel retreated without any exchange of fire or injuries. Fencing and survey activities resumed shortly afterward.

This incident highlights recurring disputes over the alignment and construction of the border fence, which India is advancing to curb infiltration, smuggling, and illegal crossings. Local residents in Cooch Behar have largely supported the fencing initiative amid concerns over security and cross-border issues.

The development comes amid broader efforts to strengthen India’s eastern frontier following multiple reported attempts at illegal activities along the porous border.
