India: Uttar Pradesh Police have registered an FIR against Haji Mohammad Usman, uncle of Bilari MLA Mohammad Faheem Irfan and district vice-president of the Samajwadi Party, for allegedly offering namaz at the Moradabad Circuit House.

The FIR was registered at Majhola police station following a written complaint by Circuit House in-charge and PWD Junior Engineer Anil Kumar. According to police, Usman allegedly parked a vehicle and offered prayers at a spot where his presence and the vehicle caused obstruction to people entering and leaving the premises.

The incident reportedly took place on September 3, when Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council Leader of the Opposition Lal Bihari Yadav was staying at the Circuit House and had held a review meeting with party leaders.

A video showing Usman offering namaz near the lawn or pathway subsequently circulated on social media, drawing objections from Hindu organisations and prompting police action.

Additional District Magistrate (City) Ankit Srivastava said an investigation was underway and that action would be taken in accordance with the law. SP City Kumar Ranvijay Singh confirmed that the FIR had been registered on the basis of the official complaint.

Usman, however, has defended his actions, describing the prayer as an act of worship and denying any wrongdoing. Some reports have also quoted him questioning the timing and authenticity of the video.

The FIR has been registered under provisions relating to causing obstruction in a public place. Police said further action would depend on the findings of the investigation.
