Former Cricket Captains Appeal for Improved Prison Conditions for Imran Khan
Islamabad (The Age) — February 17, 2026: A group of 14 former international cricket captains from five Test-playing nations have jointly appealed to the Government of Pakistan, urging improved prison conditions and medical access for former prime minister and ex-cricket captain Imran Khan.
The petition, reportedly drafted by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, was addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. It carries the signatures of prominent cricket figures including Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Mike Brearley, David Gower, Clive Lloyd, and John Wright.

In their statement, the former captains expressed concern over reports regarding Khan’s health, particularly claims of deteriorating eyesight during his incarceration at Adiala Jail, where he has been held since August 2023 following convictions in corruption-related cases.
The letter called for immediate and ongoing medical treatment by qualified specialists, humane detention conditions consistent with international standards, regular family access, and transparent legal proceedings. The signatories referenced the values of sportsmanship and respect associated with cricket, urging authorities to uphold principles of dignity and justice.

Separately, Khan’s sons have publicly voiced concerns about his prison conditions, alleging limited medical access and restrictions on family visits. They have claimed that his health, particularly his eyesight, has worsened in custody. Government officials have previously stated that medical care is being provided in accordance with prison regulations and legal requirements.

Imran Khan, 73, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been in custody since 2023. The former premier has faced multiple legal cases following his removal from office in 2022, with some convictions under appeal. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), maintains that the cases are politically motivated, a claim rejected by authorities.
The humanitarian appeal from former cricket leaders adds an international dimension to ongoing domestic political and legal debates surrounding the former prime minister’s imprisonment.
