G7 Summit Opens in Évian-les-Bains, France

Leaders of the Group of Seven major economies convened today for the start of the 2026 G7 Summit, hosted by France in the picturesque lakeside resort town of Évian-les-Bains.

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the delegations to the three-day gathering, which marks a return to Évian more than two decades after it hosted the 2003 G8 Summit. An overhead image of the leaders seated around a large round table quickly circulated on social media, highlighting the formal start of proceedings.

The core G7 members attending include representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with European Union leaders. Guest nations invited for outreach sessions include India, Brazil, Egypt, Kenya, and South Korea, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to join key discussions as a prominent invitee.

Discussions over the coming days are set to address pressing global issues, including economic stability, trade challenges, and industrial overcapacity, as well as ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Other key topics include governance of artificial intelligence, energy security, and sustainable growth.

The summit, the first major leaders’ meeting under France’s 2026 G7 Presidency, aims to foster coordinated responses to geopolitical and economic uncertainties. Joint statements on shared priorities are anticipated as the event progresses through June 17.
