Google Opens First Local Office in Pakistan, Backs $30 Billion IT Export Goal

Google inaugurated its first local office in Pakistan on Tuesday, marking a major step in the US tech giant’s long-term commitment to the country and its digital economy.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally unveiled the foundation plaque of the office during a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House. A nine-member Google delegation, led by Wilson L. White, Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy, attended the event. US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker was also present.

PM Shehbaz described the opening as a “significant milestone” and a “stepping stone” toward a deeper, long-term partnership. He said Pakistan is undergoing a major digital transformation across governance and the economy, and highlighted the potential of the country’s youth bulge to drive economic progress. “There is great scope for a wonderful partnership with Google,” he said.

White called the inauguration a “big milestone” and “very special moment.” He noted that Google has invested in and remained committed to Pakistan for more than a decade. “Your ambition of making Pakistan a $30 billion IT export hub very much aligns with the goals that we have at Google,” he told the prime minister.

Over the past 10 years, Google has contributed more than Rs 3.9 trillion in economic activity for Pakistani businesses and households and supported over 960,000 jobs, White said. The company plans to advance Pakistan’s IT export target in three ways: investing in people and skills, supporting manufacturing and infrastructure for hardware exports, and backing local businesses.

In a related announcement, Google said it would offer free Gemini subscriptions for one year to all students in Pakistan, with a formal rollout expected later in the week.

The office opening follows Google’s formal registration in Pakistan and the start of Chromebook manufacturing in Haripur. Officials say the move will help expand digital skills, support startups, and strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global technology sector.
