Government of India confers Padma Vibhushan to Late Actor Dharmendra

44-Dharmendra

The Government of India has announced the Padma Awards 2026 on the eve of the 77th Republic Day, recognizing outstanding contributions in diverse fields. A standout honor is the posthumous conferment of the Padma Vibhushan, the nation’s second-highest civilian award, to legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra Singh Deol for his exceptional lifetime achievements in Art (cinema).

Dharmendra, who passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89, was one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic figures. Known as the “He-Man” of Bollywood, he starred in over 300 films, delivering unforgettable performances in blockbusters such as Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Dharam Veer, and many more. His charisma, versatility across action, romance, and comedy genres, and enduring popularity left an indelible mark on Indian popular culture over six decades. He had earlier received the Padma Bhushan in 2012.

The announcement, released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, also includes a posthumous Padma Vibhushan for former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan in the field of public affairs. Other prominent recipients feature a blend of celebrated personalities and grassroots contributors.

In the sports category, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has been selected for the Padma Shri, honoring his leadership and contributions to the game. The awards emphasize “unsung heroes,” with around 45 individuals recognized under this category for impactful work in social service, environment, culture, health, and education. Notable examples include 92-year-old Kollakkayil Devaki Amma from Kerala, who created a man-made forest, and former bus conductor Anke Gowda from Karnataka, who established one of the world’s largest free-access libraries.

The Padma Awards, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, are conferred by the President of India to celebrate distinguished service without regard to race, occupation, position, or gender. The award ceremonies to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the coming months.
