India Decides Not to Extend Tenure of CDS General Anil Chauhan

The Indian government has decided not to extend the tenure of General Anil Chauhan, whose term as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is set to end on May 30, 2026.

General Chauhan’s original three-year tenure was due to conclude in September 2025. However, the government had granted him an eight-month extension at that time, extending his service until May 30, 2026. He will turn 65 in May 2026, which is the retirement age for the CDS position.

According to sources in the Ministry of Defence India, no final decision has yet been made regarding his successor. However, several candidates are being considered for the top military post.

Among the frontrunners is Lieutenant General N. S. Raja Subramani, currently serving as Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat. Other key contenders include Lieutenant General Ajay Kumar Singh, a member of the National Security Advisory Board, and Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha, former Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force.

Among the serving chiefs, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi is scheduled to retire in May 2026, while General Upendra Dwivedi will retire in June 2026. Either of them could also be considered for appointment as the next Chief of Defence Staff.
