India, Myanmar Vow Joint Action Against Border Threats as Ajit Doval Meets President U Min Aung Hlaing

India: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held high-level talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing amid growing concerns over infiltration, weapons trafficking, drug smuggling, and militant activities along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The meeting focused on strengthening security cooperation between the two nations to address the serious challenges emanating from the 1,643-kilometre porous border. Both sides discussed the urgent need for coordinated action against cross-border threats that continue to affect India’s Northeast region.

Key issues highlighted during the discussions include rampant infiltration, arms trafficking, narcotics smuggling, human trafficking, and even organ trafficking through the unfenced border areas. Several militant groups operating in India’s North Eastern states have established bases in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region and Chin State, using the difficult terrain for training, logistics support, and launching cross-border operations.

Indian officials emphasized the need for enhanced intelligence sharing, joint operations, and better border management to dismantle these networks. The situation has become more complex since the political changes in Myanmar in 2021, leading to increased spillover effects including arms flow and occasional militant incursions into Indian territory.

The talks are seen as a significant step towards deeper defence and security collaboration. Both countries also reviewed broader areas of cooperation including trade, connectivity, and regional stability.

Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to India provides a timely platform to elevate these pressing security concerns to the highest level, with both nations committed to working together for long-term peace along the shared border.
