India will restart issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi citizens starting June 28, marking a significant step toward normalizing bilateral relations after nearly two years of restrictions.

The announcement was made by India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi.

Visa services had been sharply curtailed following the political upheaval in Bangladesh in 2024 and the ouster of the Awami League government. India had initially prioritized medical and emergency visas during a phased reopening.

Trivedi, a former Union minister and a political appointee fluent in Bangla, made the declaration at a press event in Dhaka shortly after taking charge. The move is seen as part of broader diplomatic efforts to restore full people-to-people ties between the two neighbours.

Bangladesh had earlier resumed issuing visas to Indian nationals in all categories, while Indian services for Bangladeshis had been operating with limited capacity. The full resumption of tourist visas is expected to boost travel, trade, and cultural exchanges.
