Indian Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail to Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and Wife in Rs.30 Crore Fraud Case

The Supreme Court of India on Friday granted interim bail to Bollywood filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife, Shwetambari Bhatt, in a Rs.30 crore cheating and fraud case registered by Rajasthan Police.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi passed the order, directing the immediate release of the couple upon furnishing bail bonds. The matter has been listed for further hearing on February 19, 2026.

The couple was arrested in December 2025 in Mumbai and taken to Udaipur, where they were placed in judicial custody at the Central Jail following rejection of their bail pleas, including on medical grounds, by the Rajasthan High Court. The case stems from allegations by Dr. Ajay Murdia, founder of Indira IVF, who accused Vikram Bhatt and Shwetambari of inducing him to invest around Rs.30 crore in film projects with promises of high returns. Prosecutors claimed the funds were misused, with projects left incomplete and fake bills submitted.

The Supreme Court intervened after the couple challenged the high court’s denial of bail. This interim relief is temporary, pending a fuller consideration of their plea, and does not resolve the underlying criminal investigation, which continues.

Vikram Bhatt, known for directing films such as Ghulam, 1920, and others, has been in the news amid the prolonged legal proceedings. Legal experts note that interim bail in such economic offence cases often comes with strict conditions to prevent tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses.
