Lieutenant General (Retd) N.S. Raja Subramani has assumed charge as India’s new CDS

Following the Indian government’s decision not to extend the tenure of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, Lieutenant General (Retd) N.S. Raja Subramani has assumed charge as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff.

General Anil Chauhan retired from office yesterday after completing his tenure. A ceremonial farewell was held in New Delhi where he was presented a Guard of Honour by the three services. Senior officers from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force attended the ceremony.

The newly appointed CDS, General Raja Subramani, is widely regarded as an expert in operational preparedness against both Pakistan and China. During his military career, he has frequently highlighted security challenges posed by the two neighbouring countries and has expressed concerns over what India views as cross-border terrorism, infiltration and strategic cooperation between Pakistan and China.

Prior to his appointment, General Subramani served as the Vice Chief of the Indian Army and was also associated with the National Security Council Secretariat as a Military Adviser. He previously commanded the Indian Army’s II Corps, one of its principal strike formations with a focus on the western front, and has also held command appointments in Jammu and Kashmir.

Security analysts note that General Subramani has consistently described Pakistan as a significant security challenge for India, in contrast to his predecessor General Anil Chauhan, who was often perceived as downplaying Pakistan’s military capabilities. His appointment is expected to influence India’s future defence planning and strategic posture amid evolving regional security dynamics involving both Pakistan and China.
