Two passenger trains operated by East Midlands Railway were involved in a rear-end collision on the Midland Main Line between Bedford and Luton on Friday evening, triggering a major emergency response with reports of multiple casualties.

Emergency services, including fire and rescue teams and air ambulances, were deployed to the scene south of Bedford. Footage from the site shows damaged EMR rolling stock, with one train displaying the number 74565 and visible front-end damage. Passengers were evacuated onto adjacent fields as responders attended to the injured.

Local hospitals, including Bedford Hospital, were placed on standby to receive up to 50 casualties. Witnesses described overturned seats inside the carriages and passengers sustaining injuries ranging from broken limbs to facial trauma. No official confirmation of fatalities has been released as of late Friday evening.

East Midlands Railway stated that emergency services are managing the incident on the line between London St Pancras and Leicester. All train services on the affected section of the Midland Main Line have been suspended, causing significant disruption across the network.

British Transport Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch have launched a formal investigation. Early indications suggest one train may have come to a stop due to a mechanical issue before being struck from behind. Authorities are examining signalling, onboard recorders, and the full sequence of events.

The Transport Secretary has been briefed and thanked emergency responders working at the scene. Further details on the cause and precise casualty numbers are expected as the investigation progresses.
