Oscar-Winning Actor Robert Duvall Dies at 95

Robert Duvall, the acclaimed Oscar-winning actor renowned for his powerful performances in classics such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Tender Mercies, has died. He was 95.

Duvall passed away peacefully at his home in Middleburg, Virginia, on Sunday, February 15, 2026, surrounded by his family, according to a statement from his wife, Luciana Duvall. She announced the news on his official Facebook page the following day, writing: “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.”

Born on January 5, 1931, Duvall built a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades and over 90 film credits. He first gained widespread recognition with his role as the quiet, loyal consigliere Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972) and its sequel The Godfather Part II (1974). His portrayal of the bombastic Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979), delivering the iconic line “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”,  remains one of cinema’s most memorable moments.

Duvall earned his Academy Award for Best Actor for his sensitive performance as a troubled country singer in Tender Mercies (1983). He also received widespread praise for his Emmy-winning role as Capt. Augustus “Gus” McCrae in the acclaimed miniseries Lonesome Dove (1989), among many other standout performances in films like To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), The Natural (1984), and Deep Impact (1998).

Known for bringing depth, vulnerability, and authenticity to tough, authoritative characters, Duvall was widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and respected talents. His work left an indelible mark on American cinema.
