In a major milestone for Pakistan’s healthcare sector, the Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Centre (AFBMTC) in Rawalpindi has successfully carried out the country’s first CAR T-cell therapy, marking a historic breakthrough in the treatment of blood cancer.

The pioneering procedure was performed on a 21-year-old patient suffering from an aggressive form of blood cancer. On June 18, 2026, the patient received Pakistan-developed CAR T-cells at the AFBMTC. Within just 14 days, doctors confirmed that the patient was cancer-free and was discharged from the hospital on July 3.

The achievement was made possible by a team of specialists from the Army Medical Corps, including doctors and scientists, who developed and administered the advanced cell-based immunotherapy in Pakistan.

CAR T-cell therapy is regarded as one of the world’s most advanced cancer treatments. It involves genetically modifying a patient’s own immune cells to identify and destroy cancer cells, offering a lifeline to patients whose disease no longer responds to conventional treatments.

Medical experts described the successful procedure as a landmark achievement for Pakistan, saying it opens a new chapter in the country’s fight against cancer and offers fresh hope to patients who previously had few or no effective treatment options.
