Vienna (Dawn) — February 17, 2026: Pakistan and Austria on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker during an official visit to Vienna.

According to official statements, the two leaders held a restricted meeting at the Federal Chancellery, followed by delegation-level talks covering a wide range of areas including economic cooperation, trade and investment, tourism, education, information technology, healthcare and workforce mobility. The visit marks the first by a Pakistani prime minister to Austria since 1992 and coincides with 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Both sides agreed to expedite the finalisation of memoranda of understanding currently under consideration. They also exchanged views on regional and global developments, reiterating their support for multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in addressing international peace, sustainable development, climate action and human rights.

The two leaders co-chaired a business roundtable attended by senior executives from leading Pakistani and Austrian companies. Discussions focused on expanding government-to-government, government-to-business and business-to-business cooperation. Prime Minister Shehbaz invited Austrian firms to participate in the upcoming EU-Pakistan Business Forum scheduled to be held in Islamabad in April.

During the visit, the premier also witnessed the signing of an MoU between companies from both countries in the presence of Austrian Federal Economic Chamber Vice President Carmen Goby.


Addressing the Pakistan–Austria High-Level Business Roundtable, PM Shehbaz stated that Pakistan was working closely with European partners to curb illegal immigration and emphasised the country’s readiness to supply internationally certified skilled labour to meet Austria’s workforce requirements.

Prime Minister Shehbaz described the discussions as productive and extended an invitation to Chancellor Stocker to visit Pakistan at an early date. The visit included a formal welcome ceremony at the Chancellery, where the national anthems of both countries were played, and delegations were introduced.
