Pakistan Hockey Team Faces Embarrassment in Australia Over Cancelled Hotel Bookings

Pakistan’s men’s national hockey team endured a humiliating logistical setback upon arriving in Canberra for the FIH Pro League, with their pre-booked hotel accommodations cancelled due to unpaid bills by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).

According to multiple reports, the team, en route to compete in the second leg of the tournament in Hobart, landed expecting confirmed reservations at a four-star hotel. However, officials discovered no bookings were active, as the PHF had failed to settle the required upfront payments amid reported funding shortages.

A source close to the situation told Indian news agency PTI that players and support staff had been assured by both the PHF and the Pakistan Sports Board that all arrangements, including hotel payments, were handled in advance. Instead, the group was left without accommodation, forcing them to spend several hours waiting on the streets and roads while alternative options were urgently arranged.

The incident, which unfolded last week, has drawn widespread criticism as yet another example of administrative mismanagement plaguing Pakistan hockey. The team was eventually provided with lodging, but the episode highlighted ongoing challenges, including financial constraints and poor planning during international tours.

This comes amid broader struggles for the sport in Pakistan, once a global powerhouse with multiple Olympic golds and World Cup titles, but now grappling with unpaid player dues, governance issues, and declining performance on the field.

The PHF has not issued an official statement on the matter. The team continues its FIH Pro League campaign in Australia despite the off-field disruptions.
